WVU Baseball : Continued Success

As of March 13, 2025, the West Virginia Mountaineer baseball team is off to an impressive start in their 133rd season and their first under new head coach Steve Sabins. Following a historic 2024 campaign that saw the team reach the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time in program history, the Mountaineers have carried their momentum into 2025, boasting a 15-1 record through their first 16 games. After the retirement of legendary coach, Randy Mazey, Steve Sabins has this team rolling headed into conference play. With a blend of resilience, standout performances, and a challenging schedule ahead, WVU is proving they remain a force in college baseball.

A new era sets in 2025 for the Mountaineer baseball program. Randy Mazey, WVU baseball coach for the 2024 season, guided this program to new heights. Handing the keys off to Assistant coach, Steve Sabins, and losing arguably our best player in school history to the MLB, JJ Wetherholt, this team has not skipped a beat. Sabins inherited a talented roster and a program with lofty expectations, and so far, he’s delivered. With a 15-1 record, the Mountaineers have demonstrated balance on both sides of the ball. Their lone loss to Kennesaw State exposed minor areas for improvement, but their response—winning the next two games convincingly—showed a team capable of learning and adapting quickly.

The Mountaineers’ hot start is about to be tested as they enter Big 12 Conference play. Their first conference series begins this week with a three-game road trip against Oklahoma State (March 14-16). The Cowboys will provide a stern challenge, but WVU’s early-season form suggests they’re ready for the rigors of league competition. You can catch this series on ESPN+, Lets Go Mountaineers!
